Honorable Deputy Minister of Local Governmnet and Rural Development Halima Daud says councils have all the potential to develop if they engage stakeholders in their day to day activities.
The Deputy Minister said this during her visits to Dowa and Ntchisi where she met council members and secretariat.
She said that it was also sad to note that councils do not maximise their potential to mobilise resources they have for development.
"It is high time councils learnt to be independent by generating enough revenue to address the financial challenges they face.
"For instance, government spends a lot of energy and funds on infrastructures like markets and depots which some councils have failed to utilise as tools for revenue generation despite their completion some time back," said Daud.
Daud said that after revenue generation, the local governments should spend yhe funds wisely so that their plans materialise.
She advised councils to convince communities and partners on their role in development so that decentralisation becomes a reality.
